The Schools 48 Hour Film Challenge rules and guidance
Welcome to the ultimate test of creativity, speed, and teamwork! This challenge isn't just about who has the best camera—it’s about who can manage their time, solve problems, and work together to beat the clock.
1. The Challenge: What’s the Goal?
As the clock starts ticking! To make things exciting, every team is randomly assigned three "Secret Elements" that must be woven into your film’s storyline:
- A unique character (or specific characteristic)
- A specific prop
- A line of dialogue (spoken, sung, or written on screen)
The Mission: You have exactly 48 hours to write, shoot, and edit a film that is 4 minutes or less. Our panel and judges will look at how cleverly you integrated your secret elements under pressure!
2. Pre-Production: Getting Ready
Before the cameras roll, you need to handle your "Production Essentials." Think of this as your first mini-challenge!
Registration & Fees
- The Deadline: Teams must be fully registered by 4:30pm on Friday, May 8th, 2026.
- The Crew: Pick a brilliant team name or go it alone but you must designate an Adult Team Leader as our main point of contact.
- The Fee: There is a £12 entry fee per team, which goes directly to our chosen youth mental health charity. Note: We want everyone to play! If the fee is a barrier, please contact us so we can help.
The "Permission Pass" & Certificate Check
To get your film onto the big screen and ensure every student receives their official award, we need a few details:
- The All-in-One Consent: Parents can sign the Digital Consent Form in seconds on their phones.
- Certificate Accuracy: Please ensure that names are spelled exactly as they should appear on the official challenge certificates. These are a permanent record of the team's achievement, so a quick double-check now saves a "typo-disaster" later!
- Privacy First: All data is held securely for 2 years. Remember to protect students, do not use surnames in the film’s credits—first names only!
Strategy for Success: Assign a "Production Secretary" on Day 1. Their only job is to WhatsApp the consent link to parents immediately so it's done before you even start filming!
3. The 48-Hour Sprint: The Rules
This is where the adrenaline kicks in. To keep the competition fair, please follow these ground rules:
- Start from Scratch: All creative work (scripting, filming, editing, and animation) must happen within the 48-hour window. No pre-recorded footage allowed!
- Preparation: You can gather your crew, scout locations, and prep your kit before the clock starts.
- Safety & Laws: Your Team Leader is responsible for your safety and ensuring you follow local filming laws. If you use animals, they must be kept safe and happy at all times.
- Family Friendly: All films must be "U-rated"—no swearing, nudity, or offensive content.
- Copyright: Only use original work or royalty-free music. (Check our website for a list of free music sites!)
4. The Finish Line: Final Submission
Meeting the deadline is a skill in itself! To be eligible for our industry expert judging panel, you must submit by the cutoff.
The Final Hour Checklist
- The File: Exported as an .MP4 or .MOV.
- Title: The film must be correctly named with your film’s title and your team name.
- The Length: Under 4 minutes (including credits).
- The Elements: Did you include your assigned Character, Prop, and Line?
- The Social Embargo: Do not upload your film to YouTube or social media yet. Keep the surprise for our official screening event!
- Get ready to send, send your film to us suing WeTransfer.com to our email address, challenge@schools48hourmedia.co.uk
💡 The Ultimate Pro-Tip: Assign a "Delivery Manager" at Hour 46. While the editors finish the cut, this person gathers the final forms and preps the upload area so there’s no panic at the deadline!
5. AI & Innovation
We love seeing how teams use new technology to push the boundaries of storytelling! While we aren’t opposed to using AI for enhancement, such as generating unique soundscapes, cleaning up audio, or creating digital visual effects, it’s vital to stay "Cyber-Safe. Please never upload personal images, private details, or identifiable information of your team members to AI platforms.
To keep the challenge acknowledgements fair, we may reach out to discuss any AI tools you’ve used so our mentors and judges can take your technical process into consideration.
Remember: the heart of your film should always be your team's original creativity!
The Reward
Every team that successfully submits a film is a winner in our eyes and eligible for our Special Awards.
